There are many types of unearned or passive income, including interest from savings accounts, bond interest, alimony, and dividends from stocks. There are strategies designed to mitigate the tax impact of unearned income. To tailor a strategy to your specific financial situation, it’s advisable to consult a tax advisor. It’s important to note that IRA contributions can only be made with earned income. Similarly, while kids can have IRAs, they can’t fund them with birthday and allowance money.

If the child has a net capital gain or qualified dividends, use the appropriate Line 5 Worksheet in these instructions to find the amount included on line 5. These worksheets are needed to adjust the child’s net capital gain and qualified dividends by the appropriate allocated amount of the child’s deductions. Your child’s unearned income includes all income produced by property belonging to your child. This is true even if the property was transferred to your child, regardless of when the property was transferred or purchased or who transferred it. If the parents were unmarried but lived together during the year with the child, enter the name and SSN of the parent who had the higher taxable income.

The noncustodial parent can’t attach pages from the decree or agreement instead of Form 8332 if the decree or agreement went into effect after 2008. To be your qualifying child, a child who isn’t permanently and totally disabled must be younger than you. However, if you are married filing jointly, the child must be younger than you or your spouse but doesn’t have to be younger than both of you. Even if you have a qualifying child or qualifying relative, you can claim that person as a dependent only if these three tests are met.

What Are Some Examples of Unearned Income?

Your foster child didn’t provide more than half of their own support for the year. The custodial parent can revoke a release of claim to an exemption. Children of divorced or separated parents (or parents who live apart). This child is considered to have lived with you for more than half of 2022 if your main home was this child’s main home for more than half the time since this child was adopted or placed with you in 2022. You generally can’t claim a married person as a dependent if that person files a joint return.

But certain types of unearned income, such as capital gains and qualified dividends, are taxed at a lower rate. A scholarship received by a child who is a student isn’t taken into account in determining whether the child provided more than half of their own support. To meet this test, the child can’t have provided more than half of the child’s own support for the year. Example 3—child lived same number of nights with each parent. Example 1—child lived with one parent for a greater number of nights. But if it can’t be determined with which parent the child normally would have lived or if the child would not have lived with either parent that night, the child is treated as not living with either parent that night.
